Upcoming P-flicks screenings

You better watch out - Rare Exports

Here’s a couple of notes on locally playing psychotronic films of note to note.

Santa as monster? See what happens when an ancient being is freed from an icy prison to wreak havoc in , a cracked Finnish flick playing at the Music Box starting Dec. 24.

The Music Box programmers display their twisted sense of humor as well by screening The Poseidon Adventure on New Year’s Eve. More twisted upcoming pics at the Box include Christmas on Mars, Eraserhead, Maniac, El Topo, The Room and Gregg Araki’s Kaboom. Check out their full calendar here.

Meanwhile at the Portage Theater they’re hosting Terror in the Aisles 7 this Friday (Dec. 3) with a salute to the original Day of the Dead and the US premieres of Black Death and If A Tree Falls. Plus shorts, trailers and more – you can order tickets online here.

Ten Movie Alternatives for Halloween

A list

In 2001, Larry Potash, anchor of the WGN Morning News show, asked me to come up with some sort of list of recommended movies to watch on Halloween. Not wanting to simply send a list of the same old titles, I came up with the following list of  alternatives.

Naturally, whoever transcribed the list hacked it down and misspelled a whole lot, but it got us some exposure. It’s a bit dated at this point – in the post-DVD age, everything is a little more accessible and cult items better known – but I think it still stands up. Continue reading

Review Archive: Gimme an A

Our original plan for the site reincarnation was to port over all the content from the old website as draft entries before publishing everything at once on ‘soft launch’ day, to be tweaked a bit before a big official public launch day.

Well, we gotta do everything the hard way. Turns out our archive of material is so massive and our workforce so small that it’d take until X-Day to get it all oh-so-perfect. So we are going ahead with publishing the archives a hunk at a time while pushing ahead with new material. Today we published a big bunch of reviews of movies that start with the letter ‘A’ – stay tuned for more alphabet lessons, Sesame Street fans!

When is this fabled Sloppy Launch going to happen? Watch for the announcement sooner than you think. Meanwhile, if you haven’t done so yet please join us on our Social Media thingamajigs:

The folks at A&O Productions have officially announced the dates for the next B-Fest –  January 28 & 29, 2011!

For those that don’t know, B-Fest is practically the psychotronic Christmas – 24 hours straight of trashy flicks with only the caffeine-stoked razzing of your fellow Festers to keep you going.

Rock in the House

Well, at least in the Basement.

We long ago gave a home to local filmmaker David “the Rock” Nelson on this website, and even though we’re still in the process of revamping the site we wanted to make sure you could still sample his special brand of kookness. So we set up a links page which at this point features only a link to his section of the site.

What the heck, we’ll even save you the trouble of clicking over there by putting the link here, too.

Sinister Cinema unearths Russian sci-fi

Just received the latest flyer in the mail from Sinister Cinema, the legendary video mail order label famous for making unknown or hard to find genre titles available during the first decade or so of the home video age.

Among the titles in their “25th Annual Bumper Crop” offerings available just in time for Halloween are a couple of rare Russian sci-fi epics. The Robots of Ripley (AKA Gibel Sensatsii – “Death of Sensation”) was long thought to be a 1935 adaptation of Karl Capek’s play R.U.R., for which the term “robot” was coined. Though this is not so, from Sinister’s description it sounds like a lot more fun! Apparently it includes scenes of giant robots teaming up with workers to revolt against tyrannical factory owners.
